The files should be placed in the MATLAB/BIN subdirectory of MATLAB. The MATLAB programs are presented as M-files that can be run from within MATLAB by entering their name without extension, for example, as ALGO21. To compile and execute the program, place the cursor inside the text and press the INSERT key or SHIFT-ENTER. Then go to the cell on the menu and select “active” by clicking on the toggle labeled “inactive”.

Select the cell by clicking at the top right of the code where the brace is located. It will be imported as a single “cell”, which is inactive. Within Mathematica, open the file as a notebook. For example, to run the bisection program type >ALGO21() The Mathematica programs are presented as. The name of the program, without extension, followed by () should then be entered to run the program. Hitting ENTER again will compile the program and send the cursor to the bottom of the file. Move the cursor down to the first line that does not have the symbol #, indicating a comment line, in it. They can be altered using any editor or word processor that creates a standard ASCII file. All of the programs are given as ASCII files or worksheets. There are six subdirectories on the disk, one for each of the computer languages and the accompanying data files.

If the required software can run off the system, then the programs can be used. Minimal hard disk space is needed along with the appropriate software such as a compiler for Pascal, Fortran, and C, or Maple, Mathematica, and Matlab. All that is required is a computer running DOS, Windows, or the McIntosh OS. The programs are designed to run on a minimally configured computer. A separate README file is included in each subdirectory that is specific to the programming system associated with that subdirectory. This README file gives generic instructions for the programs on the disk. This was done to permit an instructor using the programs to discuss the programs generically, without regard to the particular programming system an individual student is using. The form of the input and output are, as near as possible, the same in each of the programming systems. The programs can then be modified for other problems by making minor changes. This permits each program to be run initially in the language of your choice to see the form of the input and output. Every program is illustrated with a sample problem or example that is closely correlated to the text. About the Program Disk This disk included with Numerical Analysis, Seventh Edition by Burden and Faires contains a C, FORTRAN, Maple, Mathematica, MATLAB, and Pascal program for each of the methods presented in the book.
